What to serve with garlic bread
Garlic bread is the perfect blank canvas to go alongside a variety of meals. From pasta and bbq, to soups and stews.
Here are some of my favourite recipes that go with garlic bread.
Ingredients for Garlic Bread with Cheese
- Flatbread – any bread of your choice will do. I use naan or flatbread but baguette is also great.
- Butter – salted butter, softened at room temperature or for 15-20 seconds in the microwave. It should be spreadable but not melted.
- Garlic – Use large cloves and mince finely, or bash into a paste. I use a garlic crusher.
- Cheese – A good, low-moisture mozzarella is ideal but feel free to use any cheese you like.
- Parsley – Fresh parsley is delicious, but basil or coriander also work here. Use a tablespoon of dried herbs if you prefer.
- Lemon zest (optional) – I love the subtle zing this adds to garlic bread!

How to make garlic bread with sliced bread
The beauty of a recipe like garlic bread is that you can prepare it with basically any bread you have at home.
That means it can be an incredibly budget-friendly side dish.
I love it when a dish is super easy and adaptable.
- To make garlic bread with sliced bread, you simply need to toast the pre-sliced bread either in a conventional toaster or in the air fryer or oven.
- Arrange bread on a rack placed directly over a baking tray. This will allow the air to circulate around the bread so it stays crisp. If you’re using an air fryer, place it directly inside the basket.
- Allow the toast to cool before spreading with the garlic butter mixture. Take it all the way to the edges to prevent burning at the corners.
- Finish with a sprinkle of cheese if you like.
- Return the garlic bread slices to the oven or air fryer for 5-6 minutes until nice and toasty.
Be sure to keep an eye on your garlic bread as it can burn very quickly.

Garlic Bread with Cheese
The only recipe you need to make a deliciously easy garlic bread! This simple garlic bread recipe is perfect for sharing. Use any type of flatbread or crusty loaf you have to hand. My favourite is to have it on Afghani Naan or French baguette. Top with cheese or keep it plain. It's delicious with gooey, melted mozzarella. Pro tip: Add a touch of fresh lemon zest for lemon and garlic bread.
Ingredients
- 1 x 60cm long flatbread, or 2 x 30cm round flatbreads (about 400g)
- 250g mozzarella, grated
- 120g salted butter, softened
- 8 large cloves garlic
- 2 handfuls fresh parsley, chopped
- Zest of 1 unwaxed lemon (optional)
Instructions
- Place the bread onto a large oven tray or two separate oven trays.
- Heat the oven to 200C/400F fan.
- In a bowl, stir together the softened butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley and lemon zest (if using). Use the back of a fork to ensure everything is well mixed into a thick paste.
- Spread the butter over the flatbread(s), using a spatula or the back of a spoon to distribute it evenly.
- Sprinkle the cheese over the top of the bread.
- Bake in the hot oven for 10-12 minutes, or until golden and bubbling.
- Cut into pieces and serve.
Notes
- Soften the butter at room temperature or in the microwave. Ensure it doesn't melt completely.
- Replace the mozzarella with your favourite cheese. Cheddar, Gouda and Brie are all excellent, melty choices.
- If you're not a fan of parsley, you can swap it for fresh coriander or basil.
- Replace fresh herbs with a tablespoon or two of dried herbs, such as thyme, oregano, or an Italian seasoning blend.
- This amount of butter will be enough to make two large garlic baguettes, should you wish to replace the flatbread with a narrower type of bread like a French stick.
- For a lighter option, replace half the butter with olive oil and reduce the amount of cheese according to your preference.
- Sprinkle with chilli flakes for a hint of spice!
